Kamchatka Prepares for Subsea Cable Repairs

Kamchatka authorities say maintenance on an undersea fiber-optic cable will cause a near-total internet interruption across Russia’s Far Eastern peninsula for as long as four days.

The work is scheduled to begin at midnight local time on Wednesday and will be carried out by state telecommunications provider Rostelecom. The regional government said timing remains weather-dependent. Mobile and home internet services are expected to be unavailable during the maintenance window, affecting messaging apps, social platforms and other online services.

Officials said conventional voice calls, SMS, television broadcasts and emergency services should continue operating. Hospitals, fuel stations, supermarkets, automated teller machines and other critical infrastructure are expected to switch to satellite backup connections while the main fiber link is offline.

The government advised Kamchatka’s roughly 280,000 residents to prepare before the outage by obtaining cash and arranging offline resources. The announcement frames the disruption as planned maintenance rather than an unexpected cable fault.

The work had previously been scheduled for September 2025 but was postponed, according to The Moscow Times. The latest notice establishes a new operational window and gives the region advance warning, though it does not identify the precise cable section, describe the technical repair scope or provide a guaranteed restoration time. Service duration will depend on repair progress and weather conditions.
