Four Cable Faults Disrupt Vietnam International Traffic

Four of Vietnam’s eight international submarine cable systems are facing technical problems, creating pressure on overseas internet connectivity, according to VOV. The affected routes are SJC2, AAE-1, AAG and Intra-Asia, or IA. The latest status makes IA the fourth system currently listed as impaired.

Cable operators said SJC2 and AAE-1 developed faults nearly at the same time on August 25, 2026. AAG was already affected by an unresolved issue, while IA has also been hit. Repair activity for IA is expected to start in early September, but no repair timetable has been released for SJC2, AAE-1 or AAG.

SJC2 and AAE-1 are significant links for Vietnam’s international internet capacity. SJC2 is designed for up to 126 Tbps and includes investment from VNPT, with a landing point in Quy Nhon. AAE-1 has about 40 Tbps of design capacity and extends from Asia toward networks in the Middle East, Africa and Europe. Viettel is the cable’s only partner in Vietnam and manages the local landing facilities. AAG connects Southeast Asia with the United States and has been operating for many years.

Users may see localized slowdowns at busy times when accessing overseas social media, streaming platforms and online games. Services and websites hosted inside Vietnam are not expected to be affected. Internet providers in Vietnam have responded with contingency steps, including traffic rerouting and load balancing through working submarine systems and land-based networks.
