Interxion expands in the Mediterranean with a new connectivity and colocation hub in Barcelona
This opening is part of Interxion's comprehensive strategy in the Mediterranean and strengthens its leadership in the region
Interxion Press release
May 9, 2022
Barcelona, ??May 6, 2022.- Interxion , a Digital Realty company , a European provider specializing in neutral data center management, announces its entry into the Barcelona market with the acquisition of land to build a new data center. Interxion's position as a leading provider of digital infrastructure in the Mediterranean and Iberian Peninsula will be strengthened by this new location, in addition to the current ones in Marseille, Athens, Zagreb and Madrid.
According to information from Telegeography [1] , since 2016 the bandwidth in southern Europe has experienced a year-on-year growth of over 30%, which represents a total increase of almost 200% in the region's transmission capacity. . The new data center will be located at a key intersection of the global internet highway in the Mediterranean region, connecting the Americas to the west, Africa to the south, and the Middle East and Asia to the east.
Barcelona is the fifth largest city in the European Union and the region with the highest GDP in the Mediterranean. It is a data center market with limited supply that is emerging as an important connectivity hub for greater resilience and diversification of networks, and which complements Interxion's Marseille campus, Europe's main gateway to the rest of the world. .
With a greater supply of data centers, an improvement in connectivity is expected, and Interxion's clients in Spain will be able to serve almost 90% of the population of the Iberian Peninsula and the south of France with a latency of 4 milliseconds. In addition, the new data center will allow companies and networks not only to exchange traffic in the region, but also to extend their services and expand their communities of interest on multiple continents.
Located in the northeast of Barcelona, ??in the municipality of Sant Adrià de Besòs, the plot is assigned an IT power capacity of 15 megawatts (MV). The construction of this first data center (BCN1) is expected to start in 2022 and be completed in 2024. The land where the future data center will be built is strategically located to provide fast, direct and resilient access to the main submarine cables and points of interconnection.
Jan-Pieter Anten, Joint Managing Director EMEA at Interxion, comments: “The Mediterranean has become one of the main interconnection points between Europe and the rest of the world thanks to its extensive network of submarine cables. This decision represents a critical step in expanding the coverage of PlatformDIGITAL ® , further supporting our customers in deploying their critical services around the world as the need for data-driven services increases globally.”
“ International digital hubs typically have three specific characteristics: first, a robust data center infrastructure; second, the interconnection of international land and submarine cable networks with local capillary networks; and third, a massive creation of corporate data”, explains Robert Assink, General Director of Interxion Spain. “Our BCN1 data center and connectivity node will further strengthen Spain's position as the main digital hub in southern Europe.”
