The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has announced a major undersea Internet infrastructure project aimed at strengthening Malaysia's digital connectivity

The Sambungan Kabel Dasar Laut MADANI (SALAM) initiative will link Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak through a new submarine cable system, creating a more resilient and geographically diverse domestic network, according to the MCMC's announcement on 16 July.

According to The Edge Malaysia, the upcoming network will consist of four submarine cable segments spanning approximately 5,582km.

The system will connect 10 cable landing stations, providing greater network redundancy and reducing the risk of service disruptions.

The MCMC said this project is designed to strengthen Malaysia's resilience against connectivity outages

The project will also support the broader expansion of local 5G services, cloud infrastructure, and artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

Interested technology providers must submit their registration of interest, along with a thorough draft outline for evaluation.
