SHV-HK, the first submarine cable directly linking Cambodia with China, has landed at China Unicom’s Tseung Kwan O L2 cable landing station in Hong Kong. The Sihanoukville, Cambodia-Hong Kong, China system is nearly three thousand kilometers long and is presented as a digital infrastructure project under China-Cambodia Belt and Road cooperation.

When completed, the system is expected to strengthen Cambodia’s international internet security and address gaps in local digital infrastructure. It will create a high-speed data route between Southeast Asia and Hong Kong’s international information hub and computing center, supporting digital economic cooperation between China and Cambodia.

The landing also marks completion of the goal set in a landing cooperation statement signed by China Unicom and Cambodia in October two thousand twenty-three. SHV-HK is described as the first high-capacity international communications submarine cable directly connecting China and Cambodia, with an overall design capacity of eighty Tbps. It forms part of China Unicom’s integrated sea-land target network connecting ASEAN.

The cable is designed to complement the China-Laos-Cambodia terrestrial transmission system, improving Cambodia’s national internet export resilience through coordinated north-south and sea-land connectivity. The network can also extend coverage toward ASEAN nodes including the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia.

China Unicom’s Tseung Kwan O L2 station entered service in December two thousand twenty-five and has already connected the SEA-H2X cable. With SHV-HK landing, China Unicom says it now has more than six physically independent high-capacity cable routes between Hong Kong and ASEAN.
