The SINES Project: Sustainability Meets Innovation
At the heart of this transformation is the SINES Project, a 495 MW hyperscale green data center campus spearheaded by Start Campus. Designed to meet the growing demand for cloud services, streaming, and high-speed internet, the campus is strategically located where subsea cables converge. Its focus on sustainability, with renewable energy sources like wind, solar, and seawater cooling systems, aligns perfectly with global efforts to create greener digital infrastructure.
Portugal’s strategic geographical location south of the traditional FLAP-D markets (Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Paris, and Dublin) gives it a competitive advantage, particularly as these hubs face building constraints. New subsea cables like EllaLink, Olisipo, and Medusa are already anchoring in Sines, while Google’s Nuvem Cable is set to follow, reinforcing the region’s growing prominence in global connectivity.
Economic Growth and a Vision for the Future
This initiative not only enhances Portugal's digital footprint but also delivers significant economic benefits. Over the next 25 years, it is projected to contribute €2.7 billion to the economy, create 1,200 direct highly skilled jobs, and generate 8,000 indirect jobs by 2028. Furthermore, by reducing the cost of data transmission and enabling seamless global trade, it will attract foreign investments and strengthen Portugal’s position in the digital economy.
Inspired by successful models like Marseille, France, and Fortaleza, Brazil, Sines aims to provide a seamless “plug-and-play” infrastructure for subsea cables, data centers, and terrestrial networks. Its integration of cutting-edge technologies with sustainable energy practices ensures a resilient and environmentally friendly foundation for digital growth.
With strong government support and the backing of global players, Sines is set to redefine Europe’s digital landscape. It offers a vision of sustainable, interconnected digital infrastructure that meets the demands of an increasingly connected world. As Portugal continues to attract global investment and innovation, Sines is poised to become Europe’s leading hub for digital transformation, driving economic growth and technological advancement for years to come.
