Somalia’s NCA, IFC to Revamp Submarine Cable Landings

The National Communications Authority of Somalia (NCA) partnered with the International Finance Corporation to prepare new regulations for submarine cable landings aimed at bolstering Somalia’s connectivity sector.
The two entities met with stakeholders from Somali operators, industry experts, and government officials during a workshop in Nairobi, Kenya. Discussions were held to establish regulatory frameworks to shape Somalia’s future digital infrastructure.
The NCA stated it aimed to address critical issues, including licensing for submarine cable landings, environmental impact, infrastructure sharing, and promoting competition in the telecoms sector. These regulations, the NCA noted, would align Somalia with international standards and support its economic development goals.
Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle (pictured, third), remarked that the private sector had played a key role in Somalia’s recovery. The East African country had endured decades of conflict, instability, and humanitarian crises.
NCA Director General Mustafa Yasin Sheikh (pictured, second) emphasized that collaboration between private sector stakeholders and regulators would be crucial to the development of Somalia’s telecoms sector.
