The people of Tonga could be waiting up to a month for a full restoration of phone and internet services.
There is currently a very limited service after several days with almost no links to the outside world following the severing of the submarine cable link to Fiji on Sunday night.
A second cable to the outer islands has also been damaged.
The deputy chief executive of the communications utility, Tonga Communications Corporation, Sione Veikoso, spoke with Don Wiseman late on Friday afternoon, and explained what they know about an issue that has brought havoc and distress to the country.
