Equinor and Alcatel Submarine Networks Sign Contract for Permanent Reservoir Monitoring on Johan Castberg Field
Alcatel Submarine Networks Press Release
August 24, 2018
Paris, France – Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) and Equinor have signed a new contract for the engingeering, procurement, construction and installation of a permanent reservoir monitoring (PRM) system on the Castberg field in the Barents Sea.
With more than 200 kilometers of seismic cables installed on the seabed and more than 3 700 seismic sensors covering an area of more than 60 square kilometers, Johan Castberg will deploy ASN’s all optic seismic technology and will help Equinor further strengthen its ability to optimize production. The seismic cables will be installed on the seabed of Johan Castberg during 2022.
With PRM, seismic sensors are permanently deployed on the seabed which enables more frequent and much improved seismic images detecting changes in the reservoir. The system on Johan Castberg will be based on ASN’s optical fiber technology which is designed to allow very high performance and superior reliability.
Philippe Piron, president of Alcatel Submarine Networks, said: “This new PRM contract further strengthens the relationship between ASN and Equinor. It also demonstrates the relevance of PRM technology to provide 4D seismic data to the most technologically advanced oil Companies. Our fiber optic reservoir monitoring system will support Equinor in increasing oil recovery in a cost -efficient way.”
This new project follows the signature of a contract for the installation of DC/FO™ technology for the Johan Castberg field in December 2017 and the signature of a PRM contract for Johan Sverdrup field ealier in 2018.
