Brazilian R&D institute CPqD is developing an optical submarine cable amplifier based on integrated photonics technology. The project, financed with Funtec resources, is expected to last three years and is implemented in partnership with Italian foundation CIFE (Centro Internazionale della Fotonica per l'Energia). The results will be marketed by Padtec. The idea is to meet the needs of applications for submarine cable with small, multi-size equipment and lower operating costs. The amplifier will operate with a bandwidth of 80 nanometers and is able to carry more than 200 channels with a capacity of 100 Gbps each.
