Vocus Communications has picked up Telecom New Zealand’s 10 per cent stake in the the Sea-Me-We 3 cable between Perth and Singapore for $US2.5 million.

The cable, which is currently the only undersea cable connecting Perth to Asia, has a current total design capacity of 140Gbps and will be upgraded later during 2014 to 300Gbps.

The cable has a current effective life to 2025 and Vocus said that purchase was underpinned by a long-term contract with a major US enterprise customer.
