President Remengesau has called on the Senate to pass the submarine cable bill which has been pending before it for several months now.
The measure was passed by the House of Delegates (HOD) last February 2015.
The bill aims that with the establishment of the Belau Submarine Cable Corporation, and the subsequent enabling of fiber optic cable connectivity, will help promote economic growth, improve efficient use of resources and facilitate cooperation on transnational matters including the management and monitoring of natural resources and disaster mitigation.
The President, in his letter to Senate President Camsek Chin and Senator Joel Toribiong, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Energy, Public Utilities, and Infrastructure (EPUI), said that Palau is in danger of missing out on joining a larger cable consortium that will enable Palau and Yap State, FSM to benefit from a cable connection that will connect Asia with the Western United States (US).
After over a year of patient work, according to Remengesau, the Micronesia-Palau Team is now coming to a critical stage-selecting and proceeding with a submarine fiber optic cable project.
