Huawei Marine Networks, along with parent Global Marine Systems, has successfully completed construction of the Suriname Guyana Submarine Cable System. The 1,127-kilometre SGSCS system will be the first of its kind in this region and is expected to ultimately have the potential to increase current telecom bandwidth more than 3,000 times what is currently available in these areas.

This marks the first commercial deployment of the Huawei Marine Networks’ innovative 1660 two fibre pair Repeater and 1650 Branching Unit, marking the start of alternative submarine turn-key solutions for customers on a global footprint.

The SGSCS system is a project which has been jointly undertaken by Telesur of Suriname & Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Co. Ltd and installed by Global Marine Systems (globalmarinesystems.com) along with joint venture partner Huawei Marine Networks (huaweimarine.com), which is supplying the overall system electronics and the innovative RPT 1660 repeaters used throughout the system.

“This is a huge milestone in the development of our system,” said Major General (retd) Joe Singh, CEO of GT&T. “Given the importance of the project we have been extremely pleased with the work done by Huawei Marine Networks, they have been a partner all along the way ensuring that the project has been delivered as expected.”

“The realisation of this submarine cable system has been an important step in serving the capacity needs within this region,” said Dirk Currie, CEO of Telesur. “It is without doubt, an important milestone in making this system a reality. SGSCS is the culmination of years of planning and hard work from all parties involved.”

“This system will allow for the deployment of cutting-edge communications services for the people, businesses and institutions of these countries,” said Ian Douglas, Managing Director of Telecoms for Global Marine Systems. “I would like to thank Telesur of Suriname & the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Co. for trusting Global Marine and Huawei Marine to install this important network. Our teams have worked closely throughout the project to optimise the solution and deliver the system to the customers’ requirements.”
