Due to the pending repair of submarine cable (SEA-ME-WE 5) under the sea, users are facing slow internet speed problems in the country. Bangladesh Submarine Cables Plc (BSCPLC) said that “the completion of the cable repair work may take up to the last week of May”.

Saidur Rahman, general manager of BSCPLC, said that their administrative work there takes a “little more time”. All in all, they said – the work can be completed by the third or fourth week of next month.

When the issue of slow internet speed drew attention, Saidur Rahman said that the country’s first submarine cable SEA-ME-WE 4 has the capacity to carry full bandwidth. For this, the concerned company will have to pay extra. However, it has not yet been implemented. There are other options. They are in progress.

A press release from BSCPLC last Saturday said that the second submarine cable suddenly severed 440 km west of Singapore at 12 pm on Friday. All Kuakata-Singapore-bound traffic through that cable is currently closed. The cable is being repaired and quickly re-connected by the SEA-ME-WE 5 consortium.

Although the service through that cable has been disrupted, the internet service has been continued in the country with the help of SEA-ME-WE 4 submarine cable and ITC companies. A significant amount of bandwidth is being shifted to SEA-ME-WE 4 cables from the disconnected SEA-ME-WE 5. Internet speed may be slowed until the SEA-ME-WE 5 submarine cable is repaired and relaunched.
